It is time to end the stigma. It is time to start talking.
Men kill themselves at 3 times the rate of women; are 3 times as likely to go missing; 3 times as likely to become dependent on alcohol and drugs; 1.5 times more likely to be the victims of violent crime; and 87% of rough sleepers are men. But men make up only 36% of NHS referrals to talking therapies.
I am Richard Cain. In my life, I have suffered domestic abuse, depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation and Binge Eating Disorder (BED). Every time I’ve spoken up about this, I’ve been treated with indifference, hostility, even mockery, because I do not fit the stereotype of these disorders.
This needs to change.
